The Jefferson County Republican Committee is looking for candidates to run for local office.
County Chairman Peter Smykla said there are several opportunities for Republicans to be elected to justice of the peace and township constable positions throughout the county. Registered voters thinking about running for office in the county may contact Smykla at 247-5550 or Stu Soffer at 247-1177 for more information.
Filing for township offices begins at noon Feb. 23 and ends at noon March 1. Candidates may file at the County Clerk’s Office at the Jefferson County Courthouse during regular business hours and the necessary forms will be available.
The preferential primary is May 22. Filing fees for Republican candidates are:
• County Judge, Sheriff, Treasurer, Assessor, Circuit Clerk, County Clerk, Tax Collector — $250

• Justice of the Peace, County Coroner — $100
• Constable — $50
Filing fee checks should be made payable to “JCRC.”
Anyone wishing to renew or join the County Committee may do so at the Feb. 16 County Committee meeting at Larry’s Pizza in White Hall, by mail or at the County Clerk’s Office during the filing period. County Committee membership is $25 for two years.
