Election panel to meet
The Jefferson County Board of Election Commissioners will hold a called meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the election commission office, according to a news release from Chairman Michael Adam. The agenda includes public comments on new business (two minutes per speaker) and to approve ballot proofs for primary, non partisan and school elections for March 5, 2024. Meeting participants should be aware that Main Street is still blocked at the courthouse due to a partial building collapse so participants must approach the election office from Second Avenue. Also, there’s an on-going plumbing issue so the bathrooms will not be available, according to the release.
Temporary road closure set in Star City

A temporary closure is scheduled on Highway 212 in Star City from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 3, according to the Arkansas Department of Transportation. Weather permitting, crews will replace a pipe culvert that crosses Highway 212 between Heflin Street and West Dallas Avenue. Traffic will detour using Highways 114 and 530 to travel to and from Star City. Traffic will be controlled with the use of barrels, message boards, and signage. Area Agency sets blanket drive
Area Agency on Aging of Southeast Arkansas, 709 E. Eighth Ave., will host the Share the Warmth Blanket Drive in Jefferson County through Jan. 4. The purpose of the drive is obtain blankets to donate to individuals who are elderly or disabled to keep them warm this winter, according to a news release. Food desert elimination grants available
The Arkansas Department of Health – Arkansas Minority Health Commission announces its request for application availability for food desert elimination efforts around the state. The commission will award a maximum of four grants of up to $10,000 each to community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, and non-profits focused on food desert elimination. Grant funds can be used for a variety of purposes including community needs assessments, focus groups, and technical assistance. Applications can be obtained at healthy.arkansas.gov and typing ‘Bid Opportunities’ in the search bar. The deadline to apply is Jan. 4 at 3 p.m.

Locals part of Small Works’ exhibit
The Arkansas Arts Council announced the artists for the 2024 Small Works on Paper touring exhibition, including southeast Arkansas artists: Matthew Howard, Pine Bluff; Crystal Jennings, Rison; Kimiara Johnson, Pine Bluff; and Alexia Lams, Pine Bluff. The exhibit will open with a reception and artist talk at 6 p.m. Jan. 4 at the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center at Little Rock. The exhibition and opening reception are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays, according to a news release. Small Works is a juried visual art exhibition that showcases artwork no larger than 18 by 24 inches. It spotlights Arkansas artists who are members of the Arkansas Artist Registry, an online gallery.

The “Blues By Budweiser” concert series will be back for a second season. NAACP seeks students for academic contests
The Pine Bluff Branch of the NAACP ACT-SO Committee is accepting applications for the 2023-24 program year. ACT-SO, which stands for Afro-Academics, Cultural, Technological, & Scientific Olympics, is a youth initiative of the NAACP. The program, created in 1978 by noted journalist Vernon Jarrett, is dedicated to achieving academic excellence for African American high school students, according to a news release. The committee will accept applications from students enrolled in Watson Chapel, White Hall, and Pine Bluff high schools. First place winners may attend the national contests in Las Vegas in July. Applications are available for the 40th annual Original KingFest™ Celebration Marade in downtown Pine Bluff at 2 p.m. Jan. 15. The application deadline is Jan. 10. The Arkansas Arts Council will sponsor Artist INC LIVE, an eight-week professional development session for Pine Bluff, in partnership with Mid-America Arts Alliance. The Gillett Farmers and Businessmen’s Club will host the 80th annual Coon Supper at 6 p.m. Jan. 13 in the Gillett High School Gymnasium. USDA extends deadline for discrimination form
The U.S. Department of Agriculture extended the deadline for the Discrimination Financial Assistance Program from Oct. 31, 2023 to Jan. 13, 2024. The new deadline will give eligible farmers, ranchers and forest landowners more time to apply for assistance, according to a news release. This program delivers on Section 22007 of the Inflation Reduction Act, which provides financial assistance for farmers, ranchers and forest landowners who experienced discrimination in USDA farm lending programs prior to January 2021.

Prayer and Pizza for children will be held from 2-3 p.m. Jan. 14 at St. Peter’s Rock Missionary Baptist Church and Feb. 11 at New Community Church. SBA sets Disaster loan deadline
Low-interest disaster loans are available in Jefferson County, , according to the newsletter from the Pine Bluff Regional Chamber of Commerce. The U.S. Small Business Administration is reminding Arkansas businesses and residents of the Jan. 16, 2024, deadline to apply for an SBA federal disaster loan for property damage caused by the severe storms, straight-line winds and tornadoes that occurred June 25-26, 2023. Businesses of all sizes, most private nonprofit organizations, homeowners and renters may apply for SBA federal disaster loans to repair or replace disaster damaged property. SBC can also lend additional funds to help with the cost of improvements to protect, prevent or minimize disaster damage from occurring in the future, according to the newsletter. Delta Upcycle registration set
The Delta Upcycle Challenge (D.U.C.) is a new regional initiative by the ARTx3 Campus (also known as the Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas) to bring awareness to the impact that humans have on the environment, tactics to minimize that impact, and share through artistic expression how communities can collaborate to create a beautiful tomorrow, according to the news release.
