ASC slates Comedic Relief with Ben Jones
The Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas will host a night of laughter from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 12, with ART WORKS Presents: Comedic Relief. Nationally touring comedian Ben Jones hosts this event for all of those who enjoy a good laugh. Attendees ages 16 and older can show off their comedic stylings through an open-mic forum, and enjoy two sets by Jones. The event is at the Adam B. Artist INC LIVE free seminars set
The Arkansas Arts Council will sponsor Artist INC LIVE, an eight-week professional development session for Pine Bluff, in partnership with Mid-America Arts Alliance. People are urged to join local creatives Jan. 12-14 in virtual, three-day workshops to learn what it takes to succeed in a creative field. Registration and participation is free. LIHEAP applications available
The Winter 2024 Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funding is available to help households with their home energy costs. The Central Delta Community Action Agency began accepting applications Jan. 8. The Jefferson County office is located at 511 Commerce Road, Suite 3, in Pine Bluff. No short forms were mailed out this season, and all applicants will be required to complete a long form and submit all required documents, according to a news release. These documents include copies of driver’s licenses and Social Security cards for all household members over the age of 18, proof of income for all household members over the age of 18, and copies of all utility bills. The program will be open for regular applications through March 22. Crisis applications will continue to be accepted beyond that until the program closes for the season. To apply, people may visit a Central Delta Community Action Agency office in Arkansas, Cleveland, Grant, Jefferson, and Lincoln counties or apply by email to liheap@cdcaa.org. Absentee ballot forms available
In preparation for the March 5 Primary Election, the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office has absentee ballot applications available to the public weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Voters may also visit the website at http://www.jeffersoncountyar.gov/elections-voter-registration to download an application. The completed form can be hand delivered or mailed to the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office, 101 W. Barraque St., Ste. 101, Pine Bluff, AR., 71601, or faxed or emailed to the office. All voters who want an absentee ballot must contact the county clerk’s office. Feb. 27 is the deadline to submit absentee applications to the clerk’s office. Pilgrim to give away food
Raven’s Nest Food Pantry at Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, 2507 Hill St., will open Jan. 13 from 8-9:30 a.m. or until all the food has been given away. Food will be handed out on a first come, first-served basis. Participants must bring a picture identification. The pantry is a U.S. Department of Agriculture distribution site and an equal opportunity provider, according to a news release.
St. John to give away food
St. John AME Church, 1117 W. Pullen St., will give away food boxes to those in need Jan. 13 from 9 a.m. until all food has been distributed. State ID’s are required to receive one food box per family. Pickup will be in front of the church on Cherry Street. Recipients are asked to stay in their vehicles and open their trunks., according to a news release.
ASC sets FunDay: Cobra Weave
Patrons can explore how energy changes states from potential to kinetic energy during Second Saturday Family FunDay, from 1-3 p.m. Jan. 13 at the Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas, 701 S. Main St. Visitors of all ages will explore a chain-reaction activity called “cobra weave,” which demonstrates the conversion between types of energy. Gillett to host Coon Supper
The Gillett Farmers and Businessmen’s Club will host the 80th annual Coon Supper at 6 p.m. Jan. 13 in the Gillett High School Gymnasium. The club continues to use all proceeds from the Coon Supper to fund scholarships and will award more scholarships to seniors graduating in 2024, according to a news release. The event will be attended by many national, state and local politicians, and people from all over Arkansas and surrounding states. USDA extends deadline for discrimination form
The U.S. Department of Agriculture extended the deadline for the Discrimination Financial Assistance Program from Oct. 31, 2023 to Jan. 13, 2024. The new deadline will give eligible farmers, ranchers and forest landowners more time to apply for assistance, according to a news release. This program delivers on Section 22007 of the Inflation Reduction Act, which provides financial assistance for farmers, ranchers and forest landowners who experienced discrimination in USDA farm lending programs prior to January 2021.

City to open warming center
The city of Pine Bluff will have a warming center set up at the Pine Bluff Civic Center at the Detective Kevin D. Collins Center. The warming area will be open from 5 p.m. Sunday through 8 a.m. Wednesday, according to a news release. The warming center will be located in the GVI (Group Violence Intervention) Area. The entrance will be at the old children’s library door with the blue canopy on the east of the building facing the hotel. “We will need volunteers to man the center during these hours. The topic will be “You can/I did.” A special motivational presentation will be offered by a high school Kappa League under the leadership of the Rev. MLK holiday closings set
Several agencies will be closed Monday, Jan. 15, in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. These include: Pine Bluff City Hall and related offices; Jefferson County Courthouse and related offices. State Capitol offices and state buildings will be closed, however the capitol building will be open to the public from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday.
NAACP sets MLK event in Star City
The Carnell Russ Branch of the NAACP will host the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration from 9-11 a.m. Monday at the Star City Civic Center. Breakfast will be served from 9-9:45 a.m. NAACP is inviting all sponsors, pastors, youth leaders, and youth to attend the celebration. Admission to the breakfast is $8 for adults and $5 for children under 12 years old. The year 2024 is the year to inspire youth to continue King’s dream, according to a news release.
Kingfest Marade set
The 40th annual Original KingFest™ Celebration Marade in Pine Bluff will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 15. Kingfest honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Marade participants will line up at Third Avenue and Walnut Street at 1 p.m. The Marade will travel east on Third Avenue to Convention Center Drive and south to the Pine Bluff Civic Center where there will be a short youth educational program, according to a news release from Pine Bluff Interested Citizens for Voter Registration. Art league sets Mardi Gras mask seminar

Lake Chicot drawdown meeting set
The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will hold a public meeting at 6 p.m. Jan. 16 at the Lake Village Fire Station, 2017 Highway 65, to discuss a Lake Chicot drawdown. The last scheduled drawdown at Lake Chicot was coordinated by the AGFC and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 2019. The lake’s fishery management plan recommends controlled drawdowns once every five years to improve the fishery and offer lakeside landowners a chance to repair boathouses and docks on the lake, according to a news release. Chamber to hear plans of new business
The Pine Bluff Regional Chamber of Commerce will host a Lunch & Learn event at noon Jan. 16 at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Services Center, 211 W. Third Ave. The event will feature officials with Graphyte, which is starting its first project in Pine Bluff, according to the Chamber newsletter. Graphyte is developing a new technology called Carbon Casting, which claims to permanently remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Barclay Rogers, founder and chief executive officer of Graphyte, said his company is setting up an industrial site at Jefferson Industrial Park and a storage site expected to be acquired west of the city. Operations are expected to begin in January, with plans to expand in other locations, according to a Nov. 14 article in The Commercial. The final marketplace open enrollment deadline has been set. People who qualify for the government’s healthcare coverage are urged to enroll in Marketplace coverage on HealthCare.gov. If enrolled by the Jan. 16 deadline, their health care coverage for 2024 will begin on Feb 1, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
SBA sets Disaster loan deadline
Low-interest disaster loans are available in Jefferson County, , according to the newsletter from the Pine Bluff Regional Chamber of Commerce. The U.S. Small Business Administration is reminding Arkansas businesses and residents of the Jan. 16, 2024, deadline to apply for an SBA federal disaster loan for property damage caused by the severe storms, straight-line winds and tornadoes that occurred June 25-26, 2023. Businesses of all sizes, most private nonprofit organizations, homeowners and renters may apply for SBA federal disaster loans to repair or replace disaster damaged property. SBC can also lend additional funds to help with the cost of improvements to protect, prevent or minimize disaster damage from occurring in the future, according to the newsletter. Watershed project meeting set
The Arkansas Black Mayors Association (ABMA) will host a Watershed Improvement Project Scoping Meeting at 10 a.m. Jan. 20 at the Pine Bluff Convention Center. The Little Rock VA Regional Office will hold a virtual claims clinic for Arkansas Veterans from 4-6 p.m. Jan. 25. Veterans may speak one-on-one to staff of the Little Rock VA Regional Office regarding their claims for VA benefits. VA disability compensation offers a monthly tax-free payment to veterans who got sick or injured while serving in the military and to veterans whose service made an existing condition worse, according to the release. The staff will be available to answer questions about existing VA benefits claims and how to file a new one. Delta Upcycle registration set
The Delta Upcycle Challenge (D.U.C.) is a new regional initiative by the ARTx3 Campus (also known as the Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas) to bring awareness to the impact that humans have on the environment, tactics to minimize that impact, and share through artistic expression how communities can collaborate to create a beautiful tomorrow, according to the news release. Election-related dates set
In preparation for the Primary Election on March 5, the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office announced election-related dates. Feb. 1-Independent candidates (for the November General Election) can start circulating petitions. Petitions must be filed by noon May 1. Feb. 4-This is the last day to register to vote for the preferential primary and school election. Feb. 14- Sample ballots will be available on the Voter View website with the Secretary of State’s Office. Feb. 20-Early voting starts for the Primary Election. Early voting is set from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. through March 4 (including Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) Feb. 27-This is the deadline to submit absentee applications. Blues concert series set
The “Blues By Budweiser” concert series will be back for a second season. In collaboration with MK Distributors and RJ’s Grill & Bar, Port City Blues Society will again host live blues concerts the first Saturday of the month at RJ’s Grill & Bar, 128 S. Alphas host Valentine’s fundraing gala
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., in conjunction with the Southeast Arkansas Jewel Foundation, will celebrate its annual All Black Fair, the Valentine’s Scholarship Fundraiser, at 7:06 p.m. Feb. 9, at the Pine Bluff Convention Center. In preparation for the March 5 Primary Election, the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office has absentee ballot applications available to the public weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Voters may also visit the website at http://www.jeffersoncountyar.gov/elections-voter-registration to download an application. The completed form can be hand delivered or mailed to the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office, 101 W. Barraque St., Ste. 101, Pine Bluff, AR., 71601, or faxed or emailed to the office. All voters who want an absentee ballot must contact the county clerk’s office. Feb. 27 is the deadline to submit absentee applications to the clerk’s office. Zeta Phi Beta offers scholarship
The deadline is March 2 to apply for the scholarships offered by the Epsilon Zeta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.
