The Jefferson County Clerk’s Office issued an announcement on the dates and deadlines regarding the Nov. 5 General Election. Candidates who would qualify for the November General Election Ballot are filing as independent municipal or school board candidates, according to a news release. Only those who are seeking city or school board positions should file during the July 31-Aug. 7 filing period. (Municipal positions include Mayor, City Treasurer/Recorder, and City Council Member.) OCT. 21 — Early Voting held at the county courthouse through Nov. 4. Rock City Jukebox to play at Live@5

St. Andrew Missionary Baptist Church, 5810 W. Malcomb St., will host a fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The rummage sale/vendor event will also include registration for a Back-to-School Vacation Bible School. Participants may register from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Annual prayer rally set
The 13th Annual Prayer Rally will convene from 6-7 a.m. Aug. 3 outside the Pine Bluff Civic Center, 200 E. Eighth Ave. The theme is “Light Up the City With Prayer,” according to a news release from Saint Mary Harris, rally leader. The event will include local and national prayer leaders. Prayers of love and unity will be prayed for various spheres and influences, including church, family, education, government, media, military as well as issues that focus on non-violence, the economy and overall betterment for area citizens. UAMS sets free screenings in McGehee
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences will offer free HIV screenings, glucose readings, mental health assessments and blood pressure checks Aug. 3 at the McGehee Men’s Club Community Center in McGehee. Called Party With a Purpose, it will begin with a resource fair and backpack drive from noon to 4 p.m., according to a news release. A free lunch will be provided. A talent show with special guest performances will follow from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with admission free for anyone who received an HIV screening. The event is aimed at residents of Desha, Chicot, Drew, Jefferson and Pulaski counties, but all Arkansans are welcome to attend, according to a news release. Free health screenings and rapid testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases are also available at the UAMS Gap Services office in McGehee.
Mt. Carmel sets scholarship fashion show
The Mt. Carmel Student Scholarship Fashion Show and Brunch will be held at noon Aug. 3 in the fellowship hall of Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, 900 S. Grant St. Tickets are $20 and available from any member of Mt. Carmel Mission Department or at the door. “Please come out to support our youth department and help them further their education,” a spokesman said in the news release.
Old St. James sets health fair
Old St. James Missionary Baptist Church, 4512 S. Ohio St., will conduct its Community Health Fair 2024 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 3 at Old St. James’ Family Life Center. Hosted by the church, this event is free. The community is encouraged to take advantage of free health screenings, backpacks, school supplies and giveaways. There will also be food trucks, vendors and other activities, according to a news release. The ARTx3 Campus have an open house for educators and hold a collection for school supplies. United Way plans peanut butter drive
The United Way of Southeast Arkansas and the UW Helping Hands volunteers are gearing up to have a Peanut Butter Drive July 1-Aug. 15. The goal is to provide nutritious snacks during summer break, especially for children who rely on school meals and may face food insecurity during summer break. United Way asks that donors drop off jars of peanut butter to the United Way office in the Donald W. Reynolds Community Services Center, 211 W.Third Ave., Suite 135. The agency can also except monetary donations so that cases of peanut butter can be purchased through the Arkansas Food Bank. PB foundation accepts grant applications
Nonprofits in Pine Bluff and Jefferson County can go to arcf.org/givingtree to apply for Giving Tree Grants through the Pine Bluff Area Community Foundation. Applications must be submitted online between July 10 and Aug. 15. Any IRS 501(c)(3) public charity, public school, government agency or hospital in Jefferson County is eligible to apply. Grants are not made to individuals or small businesses. Any nonprofit that received a grant in 2023 must complete and return the grant report form to be considered for this current grant cycle. Applications will be reviewed by a grant-making committee from PBACF. Other grants are available for organizations with programs educating, assessing and screening members of their organization or the larger community regarding health issues.

The Arkansas Department of Agriculture’s Forestry Division invites grant proposals for the 2024 Urban and Community Forestry Grant Assistance Program. Funding supports sustainable forestry projects across Arkansas, according to a news release. Starting July 1, on a first-come first served basis, residential households can apply for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) through the network community-based action agencies that serve the county where they live.
