Ken Theis, a former local businessman, recently celebrated his 102nd birthday and “remains young,” according to a friend.

Theis, a retired certified public accountant, meets weekly with his lunch bunch — the ROMEOs (retired old men eating out) of which he is the senior member. He is also a dedicated fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Arkansas Razorbacks.

His lunch bunch companions honored Theis with a birthday celebration at Lucky’s Cafe on March 4. Guests were invited to the regular Tuesday luncheon. (On a rotating basis, each member selects the week’s dining establishment.)

On this day they observed a “Very Merry Un-birthday” honoring Theis, according to a news release from fellow ROMEO, Taylor Eubank.

“One of his charming attributes is the ability to be surprised when he finds himself at an event he has attended a 101 times,” according to the release.

Lucky’s staff announced to all patrons a 102nd birthday celebration was in progress, and led diners “in singing what turned out to be a polyphonic rendition of ‘Happy Birthday to You’,” according to the release.

There was a cake, homemade carrot cake, Theis’ favorite.

Invited guests included Midge Rush, wife of the late John Rush, a former ROMEO; and the Rev. Fred and Jane Arnold.

In addition to Theis and Eubank, active ROMEOs are Gary McClure, Bill Reid and Craig Hunt.
