Bradley County hospital hosts MASH

Bradley County Medical Center at Warren is hosting students in the MASH program through Friday, July 22. The session began July 11, according to a press release from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

The MASH (Medical Application of Science for Health) summer program will introduce high school students to the world of medicine, pharmacy, nursing, dentistry and allied health through hands-on projects, job shadowing and interactions with a range of health professions.

“The program has a demonstrated track record of inspiring students to pursue health careers and return to rural areas to practice,” a spokesman said in the press release.

The program has operated for 28 years. MASH has exposed more than 7,500 Arkansas high school students to many health career fields.

“First piloted in 1988 at UAMS South Central in Pine Bluff, this two-week summer program for high school students (11th/12th grade), quickly became popular and spread statewide, eventually also being replicated in several other states. Every summer now, more than 400 students participate in one of 30+ camps across Arkansas,” the release said.

“MASH was created by UAMS Regional Programs, whose mission is to improve the supply and distribution of health care professionals in Arkansas, with an emphasis on primary care in rural areas of the state, to increase quality health care for all Arkansans. MASH programs are now funded and made possible through collaboration of UAMS Regional Programs with the Statewide MASH Partnership, which includes Arkansas Farm Bureau, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and Baptist Health,” the release said.
