Bond set for man who allegedly spit on police officer

A $5,000 bond was set Wednesday for a Pine Bluff man who allegedly spit on a police officer and tried to spit on a second as they attempted to arrest him.

Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set the bond after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge Braydon C. Quarles with second-degree battery.

According to a probable cause affidavit from Detective Marcia Oliver, Quarles spit on the officers while they were trying to arrest him, and he continued to spit on them while resisting arrest.

Oliver said in the affidavit that she tried to read Quarles his rights at the adult detention center and Quarles refused to allow her to read him his rights and refused to make a statement, saying he had “nothing to tell me because you police officers do not know how to treat anyone.”

Quarles also refused to sign the form, stating that he did not want to make a statement.

He said he would hire his own attorney.
