Boll Weevils break through for baseball season’s 1st win

An otherwise brutal series to open the baseball season ended with the University of Arkansas at Monticello’s first win of the season.

UAM scored on a bases-loaded walk and wild pitch in the sixth inning, coming from behind to beat Northwest Missouri State 6-5 on Saturday at Majestic Park in Hot Springs. The Boll Weevils salvaged a win after losing Saturday’s first game to the Bearcats 5-3.

Northwest Missouri (5-3) routed UAM 15-1 in seven innings and 18-8 on Friday to start the Weevils’ season.

In Saturday’s second game, Gabe Kuttenkuler put UAM (1-3) on the board with a one-run single and scored on an error in the first inning to give the Weevils a 2-1 lead.

Daniel Lizarraga smashed a two-run homer in the second to pad the lead to 4-1. Northwest Missouri crept back to take a 5-4 lead through the fourth, thanks to a wild pitch, John Connors single, fielder’s choice and passed ball.

Connors went 2 for 4 with two runs batted in.

Eli Marvin sent home the tying run on a bases-loaded walk in the sixth. Drew Floyd scored on the wild pitch with two outs.

Beau Kuttenkuler went 2 for 3 to led UAM, which will play its home opener at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Arkansas Tech.
