The community is invited to attend the third annual Christmas Celebration at historic Taylor Field, 1201 E. 16th Ave. (Jim Hill Way) in Pine Bluff, from 5-7 p.m. Dec. 17. This event is free to the public.

The event will feature Christmas music, free popcorn and drinks for the kids, and a chance to meet Santa Claus. The Pine Bluff Fire Department Santa Run truck will be on display from 5-6 p.m. unless emergency situations arise, according to a news release.

“We hope you can stop by Taylor Field for a short time to enjoy our Christmas present to you,” said Jeff Gross, director of baseball operations at Taylor Field. “It promises to be a delightful holiday experience for the whole family.”

Taylor Field is one of Arkansas’ oldest ballparks, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

Taylor Field is named in honor of Pinchback Taylor, a Pine Bluff real estate dealer who donated land for the project. Taylor Field was built with funding support from the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and designed by local architect Mitchell Seligman. The park cost $40,000 to build, which made it the second most expensive ballpark built in Arkansas at the time.

When Taylor Field officially opened in 1940, it featured a 1,800-seat grandstand complete with box seats, additional bleachers seating about 500, locker rooms, a concession stand, restrooms and a lighted field.
