Author with Pine Bluff ties to speak at Philander Smith

LITTLE ROCK — A’Lelia Bundles, an author and journalist with Pine Bluff ties, will make a presentation at Philander Smith College. Mosaic Templars Cultural Center is hosting the free event.

The presentation begins at 6 p.m. Friday, July 27, in Elders Lecture Hall at the Kendall Science Center at Philander Smith. Seating is limited.

“Bundles will speak about her Arkansas family ties, including a great-great-grandfather who served in the Arkansas state legislature from Helena, a great-grandfather who was the principal of Pine Bluff’s Merrill High School and a grandfather who worked for the Mosaic Templars and later married Madam C.J. Walker’s great-granddaughter,” according to a news release.

She will also discuss Walker’s role as a hair care pioneer, philanthropist, political activist and patron of the arts who continues to influence current entrepreneurs, according to the release.

“Bundles’ presentation is part of programming associated with MTCC’s latest exhibit, ‘Don’t Touch My Crown,’ which explores the history and culture of African American hair. This program is sponsored in part by the Arkansas Women’s History Institute and Philander Smith College,” according to the release.

“Bundles is an author and journalist who writes biographies about the amazing women in her family: entrepreneur Madam C. J. Walker and Harlem Renaissance icon A’Lelia Walker,” according to the release.

She spent 30 years as an executive and Emmy award-winning producer with ABC News and NBC News. Bundles is currently the historical advisor with Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture, a trustee of Columbia University and an advisor and ambassador with Walker’s Legacy.
