The Pine Bluff Arsenal is scheduled to begin detonating unexploded munitions on its property Thursday morning, according to a spokeswoman.
Personnel will conduct the first of a series of periodic detonations following a study of the grounds where old munitions may have been located.
“We will have the first detonation tomorrow and they will continue over the next six months,” Cheryl Avery, public affairs officer with the Arsenal, said Wednesday afternoon.
Avery said that residents living close to the Arsenal should not be alarmed if they hear the small explosions.
Personnel may have to detonate unexploded ordinance discovered during the first phase of a study that is currently underway on the installation, according to a press release issued by the Arsenal.
The release said that the study is part of an ongoing restoration effort by the U.S. Army and the Arsenal to address remote areas on the installation that were used during World War II.
These areas may contain discarded munitions and other warfare materials, the press release said.
