Winter wheat production in 2012 for Arkansas is forecast at 26.9 million bushels, down 2 percent from last month’s forecast and down 11 percent from a year ago, according to a crop production report.
The report contains results from the 2012 June Ag Yield Survey and was issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Based on June 1 conditions, yield is expected to average 56 bushels per acre, down 1 bushel from the May 1 forecast. The area for harvest, at 480,000 acres, did not change from last month but is down 8 percent from 2011, the report said.
As of the May 29 release of the Arkansas Crop Progress and Condition, 68 percent of the winter wheat crop had been harvested and 55 percent of the crop was rated in good to excellent condition.
United States winter wheat is forecast at 1.68 billion bushels, up 13 percent from 2011. The expected area for harvest as grain or seed totals 35.6 million acres, unchanged from May 1. Based on June 1 conditions, the U.S. yield is forecast at 47.3 bushels per acre, down 0.3 bushel from last month but 1.1. bushels more than last year.
