Arkansas Post National Memorial near Gillett will hold its annual free fishing derby at the park lake beginning with registration at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, June 17.
All children 16 and younger, and their families, are invited to attend. Fishing will begin at 9 a.m. The weigh-in and awarding of prizes will start at noon. The lake will then be open for public fishing.
Last year, the derby attracted young anglers from across the state and prizes were awarded in many categories. The derby co-sponsors, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, will stock the park lake with channel catfish.
“This is an outdoor program, visitors are encouraged to dress accordingly and wear comfortable, sturdy shoes,” a spokesman said in a news release. “Fishing poles, supplies, and bait will not be provided. Participation is free, but all kids must register at the park visitor center.”
Arkansas Post National Memorial is located on Arkansas 169 approximately seven miles south of Gillett. All activities are free and there is no fee for entrance to the park. Programs and activities in the visitor center are wheel chair accessible.
