Arkansas Community Organizations announce endorsements

The Pine Bluff Chapter of Arkansas Community Organizations announced its endorsements for candidates, according to a news release.

Endorsements include:

City Council Ward 1 — Joni Alexander

House of Representative District 17 — Vivian Flowers.

The state board of ACO also announced stands on proposed issues.

Issue 2 – Vote Against: A Constitutional Amendment Adding as a Qualification to Vote that a Voter Present Certain Valid Photographic Identification When Casting a Ballot In Person or Casting an Absentee Ballot. “Issue 2 is an amendment to the constitution that would require that every voter show a photo ID at the polls when they go to vote. This amendment would make it harder for elderly, disabled people, minorities and low-income people to vote,” according to the news release.

Issue 4 – No position: An Amendment to Require Four Licenses to be Issued for Casino Gaming at Casinos, One Each in Crittenden (to Southland Racing Corporation), Garland (to Oaklawn Jockey Club, Inc.), Pope, and Jefferson counties. The issue would allow casino gambling in four counties. “Proceeds from the casino would be taxed by the state with most going into the Arkansas General Revenue Fund,” according to the news release.

Issue 5 – Vote For: An Act to Increase the Arkansas Minimum Wage. “Issue 5 would increase the Arkansas minimum wage to $11 over three years,” according to the news release.
