Arkansans encouraged to celebrate Recycles Day

On Saturday, Nov. 15, organizations throughout Arkansas will celebrate America Recycles Day, a nationwide event dedicated to promoting recycling.

A program of Keep America Beautiful, America Recycles Day is being promoted by the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Commission.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American generates 4.4 pounds of garbage per day. The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality estimates that the average Arkansan generates 9.7 pounds of trash every day.

“Every person has the opportunity to choose to recycle, every day,” said Robert Phelps, executive director of KAB, a certified state affiliate of Keep America Beautiful. “The power to keep Arkansas beautiful is in the hands of the people who call this state home. We want to inspire Arkansans by providing them with as many opportunities as possible to be a recycling leader in their community.”

To raise awareness of recycling across the state, KAB is encouraging Arkansans to participate by:

• Taking the “I Recycle” pledge at AmericaRecyclesDay.org for a chance to win a park bench made of recycled materials

• Participating in a local recycling event listed at Events.AmericaRecyclesDay.org

• Delivering recyclable materials to a nearby recycling center listed on the Keep Arkansas Beautiful app.

• Submitting a student entry to the Trashy Photo Contest before Nov. 26. Information about the contest can be found at KeepArkansasBeautiful.com.
