Area students to compete in state spelling bee

Southeast Arkansas students will be among participants in the Arkansas State Spelling Bee at Central Baptist College at Conway, Saturday, March 4.

The first round of competition will begin at 9 a.m. with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. The event is open to the public.

Area contestants listed by county include: Arkansas County: Khalra Sims; Bradley County: Griselda Herrara; Chicot County: Mamika Carlock; Cleveland County: Kendall Sanchez; Grant County: Grace Herndon; Jefferson County: Mary Caroline Smykla; and Lincoln County: M’Kenslee Holloway.

Students in second through eighth grades will compete in the state bee, presented by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Sixty county spelling bee winners will compete for the title and an all-expense-paid trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in May.
