Altheimer teens join reading summit

Youth in Altheimer are participating in the Kansas City Teen Summit for a second year to pilot a “Connect to My Altheimer” summer reading project. The project began June 20 and ends Friday, July 29.

“Connect to My Altheimer” started with youth attending training at the University of Arkansas of Pine Bluff for two weeks to improve their ACT test scores followed by working in the reading program in Altheimer.

The project aims to make Altheimer stronger, increase employment, and mentor children, a spokesman said in a news release.

“In-lieu of traveling outside their neighborhoods for work, teens are teaching neighborhood children reading, becoming role models, and increasing reading comprehension within their hometown,” the spokesman said. “Just blocks from their doorsteps teens are training children and transforming a community.

The project is also seeking concerned residents across the Altheimer/Pine Bluff area who will sponsor one child and develop solutions to turn communities around, the spokesman said.
