Agency sets hearing to remove property from hazardous list

An Arkansas Pollution Control and Ecology Commission public hearing will be held regarding the removal of a Pine Bluff property from a state hazardous substances/remedial action list.

The hearing will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the commission room of the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality in North Little Rock.

The Pine Bluff site is identified as the “I. Easter Property” at 1400 W. Fourth Ave. Just under an acre, the locale is better known as the site of an old Arkansas Power and Light Co. electrical generating plant. The building was decommissioned in the mid-1970s and is currently inactive and abandoned.

The structure is in disrepair and contained several 55-gallon drums of unknown content and a 5-gallon container labeled “Chromium Plating Compound” when inspected by state authorities, who have determined the site does not pose a threat to human health or the environment.

Written comments on the matter will be accepted through Jan. 24 and should be addressed to Doug Szenher, ADEQ, Public Outreach and Assistance Division, 5301 Northshore Drive, North Little Rock, Ark., 72118. E-mail comments may be sent to reg-comment@adeq.state.ar.us.
