AG sues Jonesboro asphalt company

LITTLE ROCK — A Jonesboro company engaged in deceptive door-to-door sales tactics to persuade consumers to sign contracts for paving or repaving driveways, the attorney general’s office claims in a lawsuit filed in Craighead County Circuit Court.

The lawsuit alleges Moore Asphalt LLC, also known as Williams Asphalt, defrauded customers.

Typically, the company’s sales pitch included a claim that it had just completed another paving job in the vicinity and that leftover paving materials were available at a discounted rate. The company did not pave the driveways to the level of thickness promised and the pavement rapidly disintegrated, the attorney general’s office said Tuesday.

Moore Asphalt did not immediately return a call seeking comment Tuesday.

The suit alleges that the company violated the state Deceptive Trade Practices Act and the state Home Solicitation Sales Act, which requires door-to-door solicitors to provide notice to consumers of their right to cancel a contract within three days of signing. The attorney general’s office is seeking restitution and civil penalties.
