AAMU cruises past UAPB women

The SWAC’s top team put an emphatic end to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff’s three-game winning streak on Thursday.

Alabama A&M dominated the UAPB women’s basketball team 82-52 at the AAMU Event Center in Huntsville, Alabama, extending the Lady Bulldogs’ winning streak to 11.

Alabama A&M (15-9, 11-1 SWAC) shot 50 percent from the field and made 8 of 15 from 3-point range while outrebounding the Lady Lions 40-24. Five players scored in double figures, led by center Jaida Belton with 14 points.

UAPB (9-13, 6-6) junior guard Indiya Bowen scored 26 points, but only six other players scored. Freshman guard Jakyra Jackson, who finished with 10, was the only other Lady Lion to reach double figures. Junior guard Jailah Pelly led the team with five rebounds, six assists and five steals while scoring 6 points.

The Lady Lions shot 41.3 percent from the field but turned the ball over 26 times. AAMU outscored UAPB 31-17 off turnovers and 18-7 on second chances after collecting 18 offensive rebounds.

UAPB led 4-3 early after Jackson scored a layup with 7:29 remaining in the first quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs responded with an 18-2 run and never trailed again. A Bowen 3-pointer with 7:19 left in the second quarter trimmed the deficit to 23-16, but UAPB didn’t score again until a Bowen jumper 9 seconds before halftime.

A 21-0 Alabama A&M run between those Bowen shots put the game beyond reach, and the Lady Bulldogs led 44-18 at halftime. AAMU finished the third quarter on an 11-0 run to take a 65-33 edge into the fourth. UAPB outscored AAMU 19-17 in the fourth with both teams emptying their benches late.

AAMU swept the season series against UAPB, outscoring the Lady Lions 154-101.
