2nd-half goal gets win for Lady Lions

A second-half goal by Tiana Johnson off an Iyanah Hicks assist was all the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women’s soccer team needed to beat Arkansas State University 1-0 on Thursday in the season opener for both teams in Jonesboro.

Johnson scored her goal in the 62nd minute, as the Lady Lions (1-0) weathered an all-out attack by the Red Wolves (0-1) to pick up the win. A-State outshot UAPB 27-3, with nine of the Red Wolves’ shots on goal. Johnson attempted all three UAPB shots, with two of them on goal.

A-State took five shots in the final 6 minutes, 27 seconds, and held UAPB without another attempt after Johnson’s goal.

Makaila Riedel made nine saves and earned the clean-sheet victory for the Lady Lions, who will host Central Baptist College at 2 p.m. Monday at Pumphrey Field.
