The city of Pine Bluff invites the community to a commemoration of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a special screening of the documentary series “Eyes on the Prize III: We Who Believe in Freedom Cannot Rest.”
The screening will be held at 6 p.m. April 18 at the Black Box Theater in the ARTSpace on Main, 623 S. Main St. The film will be followed by a panel discussion at 7 p.m. featuring Jimmy Cunningham and Bobby Sykes, who are in the film. Admission is free and open to the public.
“We’re especially proud to highlight Pine Bluff’s own Jimmy Cunningham and Attorney Rod Terry, who are featured in this compelling documentary,” said Michael McCray, cultural development specialist. “Their participation connects our community directly to this significant chapter in our ongoing struggle for equality and justice.”
This event was organized by the city’s Department of Economic and Community Development, Pine Bluff Public Library and the Pine Bluff Branch NAACP and coincides with the 57th anniversary of King’s assassination, according to Stuff in The Bluff.com.
“The featured episode, directed by renowned filmmaker Muta’Ali, provides an intimate look at the historic 1995 Million Man March in Washington, D.C. — a pivotal moment in contemporary Black history that brought together hundreds of thousands in a powerful demonstration of unity and purpose. The documentary explores both the controversy surrounding the march and the profound sense of community it inspired, featuring candid interviews with participants who describe the experience as life-changing,” according to the release.
Following the screening, attendees will engage in a community panel discussion focused on critical issues facing Pine Bluff, including youth development and violence prevention strategies. The Group Violence Intervention Task Force will lead this conversation.
“This event represents more than just a commemoration,” said Ivan Whitfield, Pine Bluff Branch NAACP president. “It’s an opportunity to inspire our youth through historical context while addressing the pressing issues they face today. The path from Dr. King’s vision to our current reality deserves thoughtful examination.”
