House of Bread to open pantry

House of Bread Deliverance Church, 1501 W. Second Ave., will hold its monthly food giveaway on Saturday from 11 a.m. until all food boxes are gone.

Clients’ proof of address must be at least a driver’s license, identification, or utility bills. All new clients will fill out a new client intake form on-site, according to a news release. Details: Saint Mary Harris, House of Bread pastor, (870) 872-2196.

Rison resident 1st runner up in pageant

Savannah Brown of Rison was the was the first runner-up for the Miss Arkansas Tech University title Friday. She also won the Zachary McClure Denison Leadership Award and the Dr. Jim Collins Miss Congeniality Award.

Sophie Puckett Puckett, an 18-year old ATU freshman from Jonesboro, was crowned the 69th Miss Arkansas Tech during the scholarship pageant, according to a news release.

Free grant writing event set in Fordyce

The Arkansas Arts Council will host Grant Writing 101, a free Lunch & Learn event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Fordyce Civic Center, Melvin Collin Annex, in Fordyce.

Led by Shunqetta Cunningham of KHARIS Group Consulting, this hands-on workshop will guide participants through the essentials of crafting a winning grant application. They’ll learn practical tips for identifying funding opportunities, articulating goals and aligning their vision with funders’ priorities, according to a news release.

UAPB alumni to meet virtually

The Pine Bluff Jefferson County University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff/AM&N College Alumni Chapter will meet via Zoom at 5:30 p.m. today.

The meeting was changed from the Pine Bluff Library. The meeting became virtual after due to the vandalism at the public library and UAPB Business Support Incubator over the weekend.

Also, the UAPB/AM&N National Alumni Association is seeking contributions to its capital campaign to build a National Alumni Center on property adjacent to the campus. This multi-purpose structure will serve as a meeting facility, a gathering place for alumni events, and other major events. It will also be an income producing facility to be rented to campus and community organizations.

Income generated from the facility will be used to cover operational expenses, as well as to provide money for students’ scholarships. Turkey federation sets Star City banquet

The Cane Creek Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation-Star City will host its 30th annual Banquet and Auction Feb. 22 at the Star City Civic Center.

The doors open at 6 p.m. to view merchandise and games. Dinner is at 7 p.m. and will be catered by Woods Place with catfish chicken, barbecue and fried pies, according to a news release.

The live auction will follow dinner with the silent auction ongoing through dinner.

Tickets are on sale at Ratterree’s Pawn & Surplus, (870) 628-4767, at the corner of Highway 425 and Highway 11 S in Star City.

Sponsor memberships are $275, couples are $75, single tickets are $55 and for children (16 and under) tickets are $20. Attendees must have purchased tickets.

Corporate tables start at $650 and includes eight memberships and meals with the business name on the table. Upper level tables begin at $1,200 and include a prize or gift certificate.

The Cane Creek Longbeards Chapter is also selling tickets for the local scholarship fund. The winner could received a Browning Model Abolt3, 30-06 caliber rifle. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at Ratterree’s or at the banquet. The winner does not have to be present for the drawing at the banquet, according to a news release.

The CCLB Scholarship fund awards up to five $500 scholarships annually to Star City High School seniors. The fund has awarded $36,500 to local students pursuing two- or four-year college or technical school education.

The highest scoring student is selected to compete for the Arkansas State NWTF Chapter $1,000 scholarship. The winner of the state scholarship goes on to compete for a $10,000 NWTF national scholarship.
