City to host swearing-in event

The city of Pine Bluff will conduct a Swearing-In Ceremony at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the auditorium of the Pine Bluff Convention Center. A reception will be held in the exhibit hall immediately following the ceremony.

Elected officials who will be sworn in include Vivian Flowers, mayor; Janice L. Roberts, city clerk; Loretta Whitfield, city treasurer; Lloyd A. Holcomb Jr., council member Ward 1; Yvonne M. Denton, council member Ward 2; William Fells, council member Ward 3; and Bruce Lockett, council member Ward 4.

Ryan Houston, a KATV Channel 7 anchor, will be the emcee for the ceremony. The community is invited to attend. The attire is business casual. A clear bag policy will be enforced, according to StuffinTheBluff.com.

New Year’s closings set

Several agencies have announced their closing schedules for New Year’s Day, Wednesday.

Jefferson County Courthouse and related offices will be closed Wednesday.

Pine Bluff City Hall will be closed Wednesday.

Area Agency on Aging of Southeast Arkansas and its senior centers will be closed Wednesday. Southeast Arkansas Transportation will take clients to dialysis if there are scheduled appointments.

Waste Management will be closed Wednesday. Garbage will be picked up one day behind schedule on weeks with holidays.

Ivy Center plans workshop

The Ivy Center for Education will present the Future Medical Professionals/Club Scrub Project Workshop spotlighting the field of pharmacy. The workshop will be held from 6-7 p.m. Jan. 7 at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences South Central Medical Center, 1601 W. 40th Ave.

This session will feature three second year pharmacy students, Ma’Kayah Goodlow, Lynn Duncan and Mackenzie Rodgers. Attendees will learn about the field of pharmacy, including career pathways, educational requirements, and the impact pharmacists have on healthcare, according to a news release.

Workshop participants are asked to be present by 5:45 p.m. and use the rear entrance of the building.

Students in seventh through 12th grades, parents and community supporters are invited to attend. Participants may also join on Zoom using: Meeting ID: 856 8296 4187 and Passcode: 351061.

Applications available for AARP award

Applications will open Jan. 6 for the AARP® Purpose Prize® award. The award recognizes nonprofit founders with $75,000 for their organizations and a year of support and resources to help broaden their impact, according to a news release.

Examples of current support include one-on-one leadership coaching for founders, data and evaluation consulting, succession planning, prospectus development, social media and branding support.

“Are you or someone you know, age 50 or older, using life experience to give back, solve problems, or change lives? If so, consider applying for the AARP Purpose Prize award,” according to the release.

The application deadline is Feb. 28 at 4 p.m. The application link is http://www.purposeprize.org/a.
