Hurricane Outreach organizes giveaway
A drive-thru distribution community giveaway is set for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Golden Lion Stadium Parking Lot, 2200 N. University Drive.
The giveaway is presented by the Hurricane Outreach Distribution Center and New St. Hurricane Missionary Baptist Church in partnership with Christian Appalachian Project. More than $300,000 worth of toys, food and other essential items will be given away from three 18-wheeler trailers filled with donations for the Pine Bluff community.
Community partners include the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Department of Athletics, David Smith and Old St. James Church, Clarence Holman and Rose Hill Baptist Church, Darren Edgerson and St. Peter’s Rock Baptist Church, Omar Davis and St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Sidney Milton and Barraque Street Missionary Baptist Church, M. Kriston Wilson and New Jerusalem Baptist Church, and Julius McDade and New Direction Baptist Church.

Third Ward residents to meet
The Third Ward Community Watch will meet at 6 p.m. June 18 at Destiny Worship Center, 4700 W. 28th Ave. Topics include Group Violence Intervention (GVI) crime reduction, park renovation plan, and community issues. The residents of the Third Ward are encouraged to attend, according to a news release. The president is Kenneth L. Gray.
House of Bread to give away food
House of Bread Deliverance Church, 1501 W. Second Ave., will hold its monthly food giveaway Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until all food boxes are gone.

Dumas church holds VBS
Bethlehem Worship Center Church in Dumas invites the community to attend Vacation Bible School from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. The theme is “Growing with Jesus” (Galatians 5:22-23.) There will be classes for all ages, games, and food, according to a news release. The pastor is Timothy Jones.
UAM Crossett sets graduation June 27
The University of Arkansas at Monticello College of Technology-Crossett will hold its graduation for the 2024 class at 7 p.m. June 27 at the Crossett High School Arena. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m.
More than 100 UAM-CTC graduates will receive technical certificates and Associate of Applied Science degrees in the following programs: Early Childhood Education, Electromechanical Technology, Electromechanical-Instrumentation, General Technology, Health Information Technology, Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology, Hospitality Services, Industrial Technology, Practical Nursing and Welding Technology, according to a news release.
Diplomas will also be presented to those who earned their GEDS in the UAM Adult Education program.
UAM-CTC will recognize its 2024 Outstanding Alumnus, Zachary Meeks, who is a field service manager with Honeywell. Meeks graduated from UAM-CTC in 2007 with a technical certificate in Electromechanical Technology and Instrumentation.
He has worked maintenance as an E&I with Georgia Pacific, has been a field service engineer, senior field service engineer and service operation leader.

APEX sets business seminars
The Arkansas APEX Accelerator offers Arkansas businesses free guidance in securing government contracts through workshops and one-on-one counseling.
“We have a variety of training events each month,” said Melanie Berman, director of the Arkansas APEX Accelerator. “Some are in-person across the state, and others are available virtually, so we may include subject matter experts nationwide.”
In Arkansas, APEX Accelerator services are delivered through the Cooperative Extension Service, part of the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, according to a news release.
This Accelerator is funded in part through a cooperative agreement with the Department of Defense. It has offices at the Cooperative Extension Service state office in Little Rock, and satellite offices at NorthWest Arkansas Community College in Bentonville and at Arkansas State University’s Delta Center for Economic Development in Jonesboro.
