PB schools schedule Day of Prayer

The Pine Bluff School District will host Day of Prayer events at 8:30 a.m. today, Sept. 29, at each school in the district. People are invited to join them at the flag poles, according to a news release.

“Governor Hutchinson has declared the last Wednesday in September as A Day of Prayer for Arkansas Students,” according to the release. “Governor Hutchinson encourages all citizens of all faiths and backgrounds to voluntarily join in prayer for the success and safety of our students.”

Chamber to unveil benefit, sets fish fry

Pine Bluff Regional Chamber of Commerce will have a press conference at 9 a.m. today, Sept. 29, at its boardroom to announce a new Chamber benefit. The announcement will also be streamed live through the Chamber Facebook page.

The Chamber also reminds people of the drive-thru Farmers Appreciation Fish Fry at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, at Hestand Stadium. The Chamber will honor Jefferson County’s agribusinesses and the Stefan Draper Family of S & L Farms as the 2021 Jefferson County Farm Family of the Year. Volunteer food servers are needed. LenovaEDU scholarship sign-ups taken

The LenovaEDU Scholarship, a new initiative to support students with a cash assistance award toward their educational expenses, is available for applicants, according to the newsletter from the Pine Bluff Regional Chamber of Commerce.

High school seniors, college students, as well as vocational/trade school students may apply. Applicants must tell their inspiring story in a video, photo or written essay of how the scholarship, if awarded, would help them achieve their education goals. Applications will be judged on creativity and quality of presentation. The deadline to apply is Oct. 19. Details: https://education.lenovo.com/

Arthritis group to host weekly walks

The Arthritis Foundation will host Walk With Ease at the Jefferson Regional Walking Track, 1301 W. 40th Ave., to be held at 9 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday through Nov. 12.

The community is invited to participate in the event. The program will include a certified walking leader, walking guidebook and free mobile app. Registration is required, according to the newsletter of the Pine Bluff Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Health guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will be followed. These include health screenings, face masks and social distancing. To register or for details call (870) 879-1440 or contact ndbates@uams.edu.

St. John AME plans trunk-or-treat

St. John AME Church, 1117 W. Pullen St., will host a drive-thru trunk or treat event for the children of Pine Bluff from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, on the church’s parking lot. Hot dogs, candy and treat bags will be provided. For safety reasons, recipients are asked to stay in their vehicles and open their vehicle trunks. Masks are required, according to a news release.

Church food giveaway set for Oct. 9

St John AME Church, 1117 W. Pullen St., will provide food boxes to those in need from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9. The drive-thru session will be held in front of the church on Cherry Street. State ID’s are required to receive one box per family. For safety reasons, recipients are asked to stay in their vehicles and open their trunks.

St. John’s Soul Food for the Mind, Body, and Spirit Feeding Ministry is the sponsor. Financial contributions may be sent to St. John AME Church-Feeding Ministry, 1117 W Pullen St., Pine Bluff, Ar. 71601, or electronically through Givelify St John AME Pine Bluff.
