UAPB LIONS program accepting applications

The deadline is Monday, April 3, to complete the admissions process for freshmen interested in attending the LIONS Program and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

The 2017 Learning Institute and Opportunities for New Students (LIONS) Program offers incoming freshmen an award for tuition, room and meals, and a book award of up to $500 for the second summer session.

There are spaces available for 400 incoming freshmen, according to Carolyn Mills, director of the program.

The program, July 10–Aug. 10, assists students admitted to UAPB for the fall 2017 semester who want to get a jump-start on their college career. Students receive academic tutoring, attend “College Knowledge”- academic and professional workshops, and “Navigating the Yard”- personal and social success seminars.

Since 2008, nearly 800 students have participated in the LIONS Program with a fall semester enrollment rate of 98 percent.

“LIONS complete their foundation courses during the summer program and benefit from a set of experiences that contribute greatly to a more academically prepared, socially mature and knowledgeable first-year student,” a spokesman said in a news release. “As a result of this intense college preparatory program LIONS Program participants are retained at a greater rate and graduate in fewer semesters than non-participating UAPB students.”

The program is sponsored by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Post-secondary Education, Strengthening Institutions, Title III, Part B, Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program.

Applications to the LIONS Program are available at www.uapb.edu/lionsprogram and should be accompanied by admission to UAPB, campus housing and a completed FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) for the summer session of the 2016-2017 academic year.

The deadline is April 3. For details and to verify the admissions status to UAPB and the LIONS Program, contact Carolyn Mills, program director, 870-575-8362.
