The 20th Century Club met Jan. 19 at the Grace Episcopal Church for their regular business meeting. Linda Minyard called the meeting to order and the Club Collect was led by Peggy Howard.
After the normal procedures of business, Minyard named Ruby Poteet and Norma Caldwell to work on a new yearbook.
Linda Eifling was named the birthday celebrity of the month. Linda Eifling and Joan Kelley were co-hostesses for the meeting and served the members a cream cake with cheese and grapes.
DeDe Foster gave the monthly review on the book, “The Big Fisherman,” by Lloyd C. Douglas.
According to the story, Simon was fisherman by trade and acquired a fleet of ships by the time he was 28 years old. He was pretty much a loner and lived with his mother-in-law, Hannah.
“He has heard about this Jesus who is preaching a coming of a new Kingdom,” according to the review. “Curious, he finally hears Jesus and follows him. He turns to preaching Christianity but is thrown in jail by the rulers of the day as they think he is talking about a Kingdom on earth. He is finally put to death. Jesus has given him a new name. He is now Simon Peter, The Big Fisherman.”
