2 killed in weekend accidents

A Pine Bluff man was killed in a two-vehicle accident in Faulkner County and a Warren man died in a one-vehicle accident in Bradley County on Saturday.

According to a preliminary report from the Arkansas State Police, Jason D. Cole, 30, of Pine Bluff was eastbound on Interstate 40 when the 2003 Oldsmobile Alero crossed the median into the westbound lane and struck a 2008 Dodge Caravan, driven by Sandi L. Weinert, 26, of Austin, Texas, head-on.

Trooper Thomas Lopez reported that after the collision, both vehicles caught on fire and the drivers were pulled from the vehicles by witnesses to the accident.

Weinert was injured in the accident which was reported at 4:39 a.m.

Also Saturday, Michael K. Williams, 43, of Warren was killed when the 1996 Chevrolet pickup he was driving on Bradley County Road 34 left the roadway, struck a tree and overturned.

Cynthia Williams, 38, also of Warren was injured and taken to the Bradley County Medical Center for treatment. A third person in the vehicle, Jerry Cater, 27, of Warren, was not injured.

Trooper First Class Byron Curry reported that the weather was clear and the roadway dry when the accident was reported at 10:20 a.m.

The two deaths bring to 243 the number of people who have been killed in traffic accidents on the state’s roadways since Jan. 1.
