State Rep. Vivian Flowers had already announced she was running for reelection the the Arkansas House of Representatives but changed her mind and decided to run for the Pine Bluff mayor’s seat. That left the door open for candidates interested in representing this part of southeast Arkansas.

Two Democrats are now vying for Flowers’ seat: Kanisher Wooten Caldwell and the Rev. Glenn Barnes.

Caldwell is a board-certified nurse practitioner and lifelong resident of Pine Bluff. Barnes is pastor of Pine Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Pine Bluff.

There are no candidates listed in other parties or as independents for the District 65 seat.

District 65 covers northern and western Pine Bluff, as well as eastern Jefferson County communities. Regardless of the outcome of the mayoral race, Flowers’ term ends in January 2025.

The Commercial sent several questions to the two candidates. (Barnes did not respond to the request to answer the questions.) To read Caldwell’s responses, visit pbcommercial.com/225district65/.
