‘Persistence of the Spirit’ exhibit coming to Historical Museum

The Pine Bluff/Jefferson County Historical Museum, 201 E. Fourth Ave., will host “Persistence of the Spirit”, a traveling exhibit from the Arkansas Humanities Council, from Wednesday through Feb. 29.

Three hundred years of African American life from territorial days through the slave era to the present are documented with rare photographs and artifacts. Their accomplishments, as well as the struggle and hard labor of black Arkansans is illustrated, interpreted, and placed within the larger context of Arkansas’ history.

The exhibit features photographs and documents never before seen, drawn from trunks and dresser drawers, cherished family albums, archives and small publications. Presented are blacks who owned businesses and held political offices in the 19th century, as well as those who were champions of human rights and stood up to disenfranchisement and segregation in the twentieth century.

The museum has extended its hours during this exhibit. The museum hours will be Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m.

The museum is fully accessible and admission is free.
